The Why

Von Ziegler's Celtic fantasy sound comes from Dorian mode (minor with raised 6th: A#→B natural would be Aeolian). The i–bIII–IV–V–vi pattern is distinctly Celtic — it alternates between minor tonic and major subdominant areas. The Am (v) instead of A (V) keeps the harmony modal (no leading tone). Pentatonic melodies float over droning pads, and the relative major (F) provides "windows of light."

The Why

This progression uses Aeolian with a Dorian inflection (D natural instead of D# in G harmonic minor). The i–bVI–bVII–bIII–iv–V–i pattern is archetypal Celtic — the V (D major) is the harmonic minor "tell" that gives Celtic music its characteristic bittersweetness. The leap from Cm to D (iv→V) creates a "lift" that feels like a sudden breeze. Layered strings and solo tin whistle carry the pentatonic melody.

Harmonic Style

Von Ziegler's music sits at the intersection of Celtic folk, fantasy scoring, and ambient. His harmonic language is built on Dorian and Aeolian modes, with pentatonic melodies floating over sustained, drone-based accompaniments. The Dorian raised 6th gives his minor-key music a bittersweet, hopeful quality distinct from pure Aeolian sadness. His arrangements use layered strings, ethnic flutes, and gentle percussion to create an immersive, transportive quality.
