The Why

Suspended chords (A7sus4 instead of A7) and major 7ths (Gmaj7) remove all "urgency" from the harmony — there is no leading tone demanding resolution. The slow harmonic rhythm (one chord every 4+ beats) gives the listener time to breathe. The I→IVmaj7→I motion is pure tranquility.

Theory of Serene Music

Serenity is achieved by removing urgency. Suspended chords (sus2, sus4) remove the third, creating an open, ambiguous quality that doesn't demand resolution. Major 7th chords add a gentle "halo" of dissonance that feels transcendent rather than tense. Slow harmonic rhythm (4+ beats per chord) allows the listener to breathe. There are no dominant chords — nothing "pushes" forward.
