Tense
Anxious, uneasy progressions that create suspense, urgency, and anticipation. The harmonic language of thrillers and horror.
Musical Characteristics
Progression: Anxious
Scale — A
The Why
The repeated tritone in the bass (A–Eb if using a diminished passing chord) creates an unmoving tension. Chromatic movement in inner voices (Bdim→C, Dm→E7) creates a "crawling skin" sensation. The E7→F movement is a deceptive cadence that denies expected resolution. Ostinato patterns over this harmony are the basis of horror and thriller scores.
Theory of Tense Music
Tension is built through denial — chromatic movement creates expectations that are never met on time. The tritone (the interval of the augmented 4th) is the most unstable interval in Western harmony and is the foundation of suspense scoring. Ostinato patterns (repeating short melodic/harmonic figures) create a sense of relentless forward motion that mimics a racing heartbeat.
