Suspenseful
Creeping, dread-filled progressions for moments of anticipation, stalking, and impending danger.
Musical Characteristics
Progression: Creeping
Scale — C
The Why
The tritone root movement (Cm→F#dim) is the core of suspense — the interval of the augmented 4th is historically called "diabolus in musica" (devil in music). The pedal point on C (the bass holds C even as chords change above) creates a "waiting" sensation. Diminished chords act as "question marks" that never resolve properly.
Theory of Suspenseful Music
Suspense is built by refusing to resolve. A pedal point (sustained bass note) while chords change above creates a feeling of "waiting" — something is coming but hasn't arrived yet. Tritone-based harmony (the "devil's interval") creates maximum instability. Diminished chords are the harmonic equivalent of "question marks" — they could resolve anywhere, which is exactly what creates uncertainty.
